MARIKA Deku has always been creative as a child.

So it was not surprising that he ended up studying fashion design at The Fashion Design Studio Sydney, Australia.

Under his label Marika Deku, the Australian-born designer is set to make his inaugural collection debut called Seahorse Serene at the FJFW Resort Wear Show this year.

"I decided to show the inaugural collection at Fiji Fashion Week as I think it's a great way to reconnect with my Fijian heritage and get a better understanding of Fijian culture through a fashion perspective," said Deku.

Deku was born in Australia to mixed parentage. His father was born in Sigatoka and still has close ties there.

"I think fashion is really international now with excellent worldwide coverage and opportunities, but the essence of a particular place is still really important, and I'd like to be a part of that Fijian take on fashion."

Deku's collection examines the traditional attributes of femininity and re-evaluating the commonly regarded attributes of women's wear.

Through a strong focus on print, Deku expresses "glorious sophistication" in resort wear without ostentation from blog-worthy street style pieces to high-end occasional wear.

"There is so much "Made in China" these days, I'd like to participate in growing the Fijian economy in any small way I can," he said.

These inaugural collections draw inspiration from both the glamour of the 1970s and the traditional safari suit, then seeks to contemporise and apply them to fashion forward garments of great quality and beauty.

With a sly nod to modern street wear in a mash-up of eclectic styles that the contemporary woman understands, Marika Deku has created a collection of looks to wear with confidence, elegance and grace, from poolside through to the evening.
