INTERNATIONAL designer Dena Burton will be showing two collections at the Fiji Fashion Week 2015 (FJFW15) Resort Wear and Couture Resort, Bridal and Evening shows.
Burton, who hails from Chicago, Illinois, said in a statement she gained great exposure and an appreciation for music and art in her formative years and because of that exposure she was naturally drawn to the world of fashion, thus the formation of The Dena Burton Collection.
Based in Los Angeles, CA Burton designs clothing for the woman who knows her own beauty, her purpose and the road that takes her there.
This will be Burton's first time in Fiji and she is looking forward to the experience.
"I've heard several wonderful things about Fiji but two that really stand out for me are that the people of Fiji are very hospitable, spiritual and warm-hearted, I consider myself to have the same character so I'm really looking forward to meeting beautiful people and immersing myself in the culture," Ms Burton said.
FJFW managing director Ellen Whippy-Knight is excited to welcome Dena Burton to the FJFW15 because she believes established designers have knowledge on what it takes to market labels internationally and at the same time they gain perspective on what our island paradise's take is on fashion and how we interpret trends.
"Bringing International designers here to Fiji is about the exchange of knowledge, we are facilitating an opportunity for our Fijian designers to take that knowledge and see whether they can apply that to their label and make it work for them yet at the same time these international designers are looking to experience the same thing they want to learn new things and see if they can apply it to their labels as well whether it be our cultural art, our perceptions of fashion or our garment industry" said Whippy -Knight.
As a native of Chicago and graduate of Howard University in Washington, DC, Dena moved to California to work in several capacities of the entertainment industry, including TV, short films and theatre.
It was also where she decided to pursue her dream of fashion design.
As a Karen Kane scholarship recipient at The Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising (FIDM), Dena produced her first collection while at FIDM where she received numerous accolades from industry leaders and peers.
In past years, the Dena Burton Collection has appeared in several of the exclusive fashion events such as, Mercedes Benz Fashion Week LA, San Francisco Fashion Week, and recently Miami Fashion Week. Because Dena believes in giving back, she has showcased the collection in Africa as well as Jamaica for various charities.
Dena's success and rising popularity has fortified the brand's vision, by seeing women feel and become confident with their own sense of purpose.
The Fiji Times is a proud supporter of the Fiji Fashion Week.
