Fashion show in doubt

MORE distress is being shown towards the recent news of FJFW's financial issues.

In an interview yesterday, Textile Clothing and Footwear (TCF) Council of Fiji president Kalpesh Solanki said FJFW provided an admirable platform for budding local designers.

"The FJFW has stamped its mark as an excellent professional platform for emerging and established fashion designers to showcase their talents, not only from Fiji but also around the region," Mr Solanki said.

He said as a strong supporter and sponsor of the fashion show, it would be a shame to see it fold because of financial issues.

"The council hopes that FJFW will continue the good work it has been doing over the past few years.

"It would be disappointing to see FJFW not eventuate this year because of lack of finance or sponsorship.

"Fiji certainly has very creative people and in particular the younger generation who are looking to get into fashion design.

"FJFW offers opportunities for Fijian youths to demonstrate their flair and start a career. It would be a shame to lose that opportunity."

Mr Solanki said Fiji as the host country of the fashion show was an asset.

"The potential of Fiji to service the international fashion market is quite attractive.

"Fiji naturally possesses many of the successful attributes that international fashion designers and retailers require from the production side of their industry."

FJFW managing director Ellen Whippy-Knight had said the prospects for the fashion show were in serious doubt as of late.

In an article she wrote in The Fiji Times last week, Mrs Whippy-Knight said the event, scheduled for October 1 - 5, would not proceed if it could not source the funds.
