Lady Gaga and Tyra Banks Designer to Feature at Fiji Fashion Week
FIJI FASHION WEEK 2012 has received a major boost following the confirmation recently that New York-based fashion designer LaQuan Smith will attend the event in mid-October.
LaQuan, who has designed outfits for singers Lady Gaga and Rihanna, and America’s Top Model host Tyra Banks will also be a keynote speaker at the Fiji Fashion & Design Forum to be attended by design students and members of the public, scheduled for Wednesday October 17 at the Fiji National University (FNU) who are the major sponsors of the event.
He will then close the Established Designers Fashion Show on Friday October 19th at the Vodafone Arena in Laucala Bay.
Speaking from New York to Fiji Fashion Week’s Media Team, 24 year old LaQuan said he was excited about visiting Fiji and was looking forward to meeting design students here.
“I really wanted to be a part of Fiji fashion week, I will be debuting my Spring 13 collection which I’m very excited about. In fact Fiji played a big part of my inspiration.”
FJFW Director Ellen Whippy-Knight said LaQuan agreeing to be at Fiji Fashion Week was a huge boost for the image of the event, and a big plus for the students of design. Ms Whippy-Knight said FJFW had been working on bringing LaQauan to Fiji since 2009.
LaQuan’s visit and participation at Fiji Fashion Week have been made possible with the generous assistance of the Embassy of the United States of America in Suva.
“FJFW is committed to developing the fashion industry in Fiji and that work includes bringing international fashion successes like LaQuan to join our designers. Having New York talent on the runway with our own exceptional Fiji designers can only serve to motivate and encourage our emerging designers and students of fashion and design.”
Born in 1988 in Queens, New York, LaQuan has always had a love for fashion and design, and at the age of 13, his grandmother passed on her old Singer sewing machine for him to practice on. After a traumatic and difficult battle with cancer, LaQuan was able to regroup and refocus on his passion - fashion design.
In 2007, after graduating from high school, LaQuan began working as an intern at Blackbook, a prominent magazine in New York City. In 2008, he created his self-titled designer brand.
At only 22 years old, LaQuan made his debut into New York Fashion Week in 2010. The audience this fashion show entitled “Water Goddess” comprised of 75 exclusive attendees, including top fashion press, buyers, and celebrities. Notable attendees included: Vogue Editor-at-Large, Andre Leon Talley, and Vogue Style Director, Alexandra Kaptur.
Multiple fashion experiences and pure ambition have opened doors for LaQuan, allowing him to work with some of the industry’s top models and photographers.
LaQuan has received tremendous amounts of press for his work from many of the world’s top publications including Vogue, The New York Times, NY Daily News, Wall Street Journal, Marie Claire, Essence and Ebony.
LaQuan’s success has allowed him to showcase his collection with fashion shows in Atlanta, Philadelphia, Athens, Cayman Islands, South Africa, LA, New York and more.
While in Atlanta supporting Foundation F.O.C.U.S, LaQuan received the F.O.C.U.S. for Life Service Award for surviving cancer and not allowing the trauma of such an experience hold him back from his passion.
Through his travels, LaQuan was inspired to create a diffusion line for the everyday women he encountered at each city. LaQuan Smith's diffusion line entitled "LQS" was first introduced at Africa Fashion Week in Johannesburg, South Africa. LaQuan opened his first showroom in 2011 in Soho, New York.
