THE love of a fashion movie inspired a secondary school student to break through the local fashion industry.

Mesake Rika is drawing inspiration from nature for his maiden collection at the Fiji Fashion Week (FJFW) 2015 Student Designer Show.

"This is my first time designing, one of the main reasons why I started designing is because I loved the fashion movie 'The face', that inspired me," said the Gospel High School student.

Rika said a role model he followed closely in the fashion industry was FJFW veteran model Suliana Taukei.

"I love that she's a great model and because she's my neighbour's cousin, I always meet her when she comes next door. I love how she dresses and walks on the runway."

Rika is one of 15 student designers showing at FJFW15.

He said though he had the support of his school and classmates, he was initially told by his mother not to pursue fashion as a career but she later changed her mind.

"My mother told me not to do designing but then she said yesterday morning that somebody from Fiji Fashion Week called and said there's a meeting in the afternoon, so she gave my bus fare."
